What is Body Stress?

Body Stress is a powerful factor in all our lives and can undermine our health and well-being in many ways. Every day we are exposed to different types of stress;

Physical stress - issues caused by poor posture, strain and overuse of joints and muscles. Accidents and injuries such as whiplash.

Emotional stress - the slow build up of work and life related stress or sudden life-changing events such as bereavement and illness, moving house and relationship breakdowns.

Chemical stress - this includes food intolerance to the things we eat and drink and the reaction to drugs and medication.

We all have our own individual tolerance to stress whether that be physical, emotional or chemical. Once we go over this threshold our nerves cause the muscles to contract in a protective and defensive mode, storing the stress in the muscles. This is what we call 'body stress'. This clamping down and splinting can cause a great deal of pain, restrict joint movement and can affect the surrounding nerves and tissues.

Sometimes this body stress can cause pain to be referred to other areas of the body; for example problems in your lower back can cause a referred pain such as sciatica.

The disruption of nerve signals can also cause feelings of numbness or pins and needles, often felt in the arms or fingers.

What happens during a BSR session?

Body Stress Release is performed whilst you are fully clothed, mainly concentrating on your back, spine and associated structures.

A typical visit involves a consultation, the BSR release itself, and concludes with self-care advice and planning your next session.

The BSR practitioner will do a series of pressure tests. These tests and the muscular responses indicate the exact sites of stored stress. The BSR release involves a light but definite pressure in the precise directions indicated by the tests.

The intervention of BSR helps restore muscle tone and ease pain by kickstarting the body's in-built ability to heal and maintain itself.
